The Australian National University (ANU) is a public research university based in Canberra, the capital of Australia. The university’s main campus in Acton surrounds seven teaching and research colleges, in addition to several national academies and institutes.

The university is considered one of the world’s leading universities and is rated as the number one university in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere by the 2022 QS World University Rankings and second in Australia in the Times Higher Education rankings. Compared to other universities in the world, Australian National University is rated 27th by the 2022 QS World University Rankings, and equal to 54th by the 2022 Times Higher Education.

Founded in 1946, the university is the only university to have been formed by the Parliament of Australia. Australian National University’s history can be traced to Canberra University College, which was founded in 1929 and was incorporated into ANU in 1960. The university enrolls 10,052 undergraduate and 10,840 postgraduate students and employs 3,753 staff. Its endowment stood at A$1.8 billion as of 2018.

Australian National University counts six Nobel laureates and 49 Rhodes scholars among its faculty and alumni. However, the university has educated two prime ministers and more than a dozen current heads of government departments in Australia. The Australian National University had funding and staff cuts in the School of Music in 2011–15, and in the School of Culture, History, and Language in 2016. Although, there is a range of global (governmental) endowments available for Arts and Social Sciences, designated only for the university. Some courses are now delivered online.

The university has exchange agreements in place for its students with many foreign universities, most notably in the Asia-Pacific region, including the National University of Singapore, the University of Tokyo, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Seoul National University. In other regions, renowned universities include Université Paris Sciences et Lettres the George Washington University, the University of California, the University of Texas, the University of Toronto in North America and Imperial College London, King’s College London, Sciences Po, ETH Zürich, Bocconi University, the University of Copenhagen and Trinity College Dublin in Europe.

Furthermore, in 2017, Chinese hackers entered the computers of the Australian National University, potentially compromising national security research performed at the university. The main campus of the university extends across the Canberra suburb of Acton, which consists of 358 acres (1.45 km2) of mostly parkland with university buildings landscaped within.

  • 20 working days of recreation leave
  • 10 working days of medical leave
  • 60 working days of extra medical leave
  • 60 working days of parental leave
  • 5 days of partner parental leave
  • The scholarship also covers dependent Child Allowance for the international student ($3,000/annum/child- max $9000)
  • Relocation reimbursement (capped at $1000 for domestic students, $2500 for international students)
  • Thesis Allowance of up to $500

Requirements for Kenneth Freeman Scholarship

The Kenneth Freeman Scholarship will be available each year to a prospective or continuing domestic or international student who:

  • is enrolled or enrolling full-time in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Astronomy and Astrophysics, based in the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the ANU College of Science; and
  • has proved First class honors (H1), or demonstrated equivalent requirements.
