Once every three years, the Research School of Earth Sciences may offer a Chappell and White PhD Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to support high-achieving domestic and international PhD students who are performing research in the areas of petrology and ore petrology. Grant for this Award has been provided by Professor Bruce Chappell and Professor Allan White.
Professor Bruce Chappell’s career at Australian National University transited more than 30 years from 1960 to 1997. In 1967 he graduated with the University PhD and was awarded an ANU DSC in 1990. The professor’s sustained research contributions were recognized with many international awards including the election to the Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science.
Professor Allan White was a member of the Geology Department at ANU from 1960 to 1971. He was also an undergraduate student of the renowned Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer Professor Sir Douglas Mawson. White left Australian National University to set up the Department of Geology at La Trobe University.

Australian National University was rated 27th in the world (first in Australia) by the 2022 QS World University Rankings, equal to 54th, and equal to 2nd in Australia (with the University of Queensland), by the 2022 Times Higher Education. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, the university was ranked 6th in the world for geology, 7th for philosophy, 8th in the world for politics, 9th in the world for sociology, and 13th in the world for development studies, and 15th in the world for linguistics.
In addition, A 2017 study by Times Higher Education reported that the university was the world’s 7th (first in Australia) most international university. Also, in the 2020 Times Higher Education Global Employability University Ranking, an annual ranking of university graduates’ employability, the Australian National University was rated 15th in the world (first in Australia).

- Stipend scholarship of $28,092 per year (2020 rate).
- In addition to the fortnightly stipend, the scholarship also provides:
- Travel and Removal allowances for students migrating to Canberra to commence their research program;
Thesis refund;
- Dependant Child allowance (International students only);
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) (International Students Only); and
- Paid medical, maternity, and parental leave.
Requirements for Chappell and White PhD Scholarship
- The Chappell and White PhD Scholarship will be available every three years to a prospective or continuing student who is a domestic and/or international student.
- To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be enrolled or enrolling full-time in a program of study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Earth Sciences and are conducting research in the areas of petrology and ore petrology at the University.
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with first-class honors, or a Master’s degree with a research component or equivalent from a recognized university to be qualified for Chappell and White PhD Scholarship.
